awarded Gas Systems Corporation a purchase order for a three train nitrogen generator system capable of supplying instrument air and inert nitrogen gas for purging and blanketing requirements at a new greenfield biomass plant. The new plant will burn macadamia nut shells generate 1.2 megawatts of electricity for the island. Burning the macadamia nut shells produces activated carbon as a byproduct, which is a substance used for sophisticated water and chemical filtration equipment. On site nitrogen generation was the best solution for Big Island Carbon’s nitrogen requirement. Hawaii has only one commercial air separation unit (ASU) in the island chain. The plant is typically sold out and would have presented a huge risk for the plant’s on-stream reliability. With this in mind, Gas Systems engineers designed an on-site nitrogen generation system with 100% redundancy for maximum reliability cost savings over hauled-in liquid nitrogen.
